Photo Essay: Game Developers Conference

Upstairs.jpg

This past week, LAist got a chance to travel up to San Francisco to check out the Game Developers Conference. GDC is universally known as one of the most fun and exciting of the industry's gatherings, where publishers, press, and lecture attendees convene to discover the latest in gaming technology. This year we got to see a ton of kickass stuff, including an exclusive look at the new Street Fighter title from Capcom and a drunken jaunt on the Wii Fit. Check out more photos from GDC after the jump.

TNGames.jpg

Our first stop was TN Games, a company that makes a vest and helmet that physically responds to attacks in the game by force feedback air bladders built into the vest.

NeuroSky.jpg

The NeuroSky brainwave reader allows users to actually control a character on screen with their own brain power. It measures how much attention your paying, and further allows you to control various aspects of a character, such as raising limbs and lifting objects.

Motioncapture.jpg

There were a ton of motion capture companies presenting their tech, always with pretty girls in lit-up suits.

Here's Philip's booth, which mainly showed off its AMBx speaker series.

The THX logo maintenance dude.

Here's a look at Playstation's booth.

And another. Not too much announced on the PS3 side, however more and more people are buying PS3's this year (outselling Xbox 360) based on the latest sales figures.

Pleo.jpg

The infamous Pleo dinosaur, a toy that responds to various movements via sensors.

S3Graphics.jpg

A look at S3 Graphics race car simulator.

SFIV.jpg

Our exclusive look at the new Street Fighter IV from Capcom. Hint; play as Ryu if you want to keep your spot!

SSBB.jpg

Some Super Smash Brothers Brawl goin on at the Nintendo booth.
wiifit.jpg

A closer look at Wii Fit, Nintendo's new exercise accoutrement that recognizes weight distribution on the balance board. We played a soccer goalie game, some hoola hoops, some slalom skiing and a ski jump. Not easy!

ZDome.jpg

Finally, here's a look at Z-dome, a domed screen that allows a user to feel more immersed in a game. Not the best environment for Guitar Hero, but Call of Duty 4 rules on it. We were told that the military is a primary solicitor of the Z-dome.

Between the conference and the parties, San Francisco was crawling with geeks foaming at the mouth for the latest information. GDC is always a good time, and until next time, we'll just have E3 to look forward to this year.
