Found in LA: The Missing Chair

Ellis Gallagher's Los Angeles shadow chalkI discovered this street art on 8th, just west of Grand in downtown LA last week.

But where is the chair?

It looks like Brooklyn chalk artist Ellis Gallagher has decided to grace Los Angeles with his presence and art. His cryptic signature, "© Ellis G. 2007" seems to be barely decipherable on the other side of the parking meter, along with "NYC".

Well-known artist Michael Neff has identified it for me as an authentic Ellis G (You should definitely check out Michael Neff's work -- he also has his own website.).

On January 30th, Gothamist reported on Ellis' legal difficulties after he was arrested for graffiti chalking (similarly, a 6-year-old got in trouble for the same in New York City). "I think [the NYPD] should reassess their priorities and not waste taxpayer dollars on policing people for chalking sidewalks," he said.

In addition to Ellis G. and Neff, there are entire Flickr pools for this art form.

Have you seen any chalk shadows around town lately? Add them to the LAist Flickr pool and let's see how many we can find.

As soon as I saw this pic I recognized it from a music video I watched yesterday. Lo and behold I re-watch the video and yes there it is. I checked the credits, and yes it is Ellis Gallagher. You can actually watch him making the piece (and others in the LA area) in the video:

The song is called Paint Me in Your Sunshine by local YouTube star Marié Digby. The video was part of a project called Sound of Color, which I blogged about here:
