  • Close, but not close enough: a 3.9 earthquake hit Baja California today at 1:50 p.m. Now that we think of it, getting yourself prepared for a major earthquake is a great New Year's resolution!
  • Those rodes are slick, stay safe! This morning's crash on the 5 near the 170 left one dead and three others injured.
  • Who loves the politics of hair? Pam Spaulding at Pandagon writes that Essense Magazine's Top Ten Celeb Hair Moments of 2007 are questionable choices. "Nine out of 10 women selected have processed, straightened hair." Ladies, we'll keep on saying this, but we like the natural curls!
  • Only for the hardcore: Burning Man will no longer sell tickets at the gate, they are going pre-sale only.
  • Jimmy Kimmel to join Leno and Conan: "Though it makes me sick to do so without my writers, there are more than a hundred people whose financial well-being depends on our show. It is time to go back to work. I support my colleagues and friends in the WGA completely and hope this ends both fairly and soon.”
  • What's going on in San Francisco? Oh you know, the Mayor is trying to tax Soda Pop and UC Berkeley kids are doing their own version of UCLA's Undie Run, minus the Undie part (NSFW).
  • "Sorry, but because you are located in the USA you cannot use the search features of the Torrentspy.com website." TorrentSpy lost its battle against the MPAA in a Los Angeles court today.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
