CD Review: No Age - "Weirdo Rippers"

Perhaps you had a chance to see No Age at one of their shows at the end of the August at the Troubador or perhaps the Fuck Yeah Fest. If you missed them you'll have a chance to see the LA-based duo of Dean Spunt and Randy Randall (frickin' love that name) again but until then you should consider giving their album Weirdo Rippers a listen or 10 like I have in the last couple days. Weirdo Rippers is a compendium of No Age's vinyl releases of the last couple years.

Not that what No Age does is derivative but when hearing them I thought of Sonic Youth with vocal treatments by the Ramones, the Damned, and '80s surf punk. I also hear a bit of the Jesus & Mary Chain as well as noise rockers Polvo. No Age composes complex guitar soundscapes with amazing echoes and reverb that morph and burst into sing-along choruses ("oooh yeah"s galore). The album starts out with the Big Country-esque "Every Artist Needs A Tragedy" and leaps into a 1-2 1-2 straight-edge punk ditty known as "Boy Void". What follows is the mega-soundscape "I Wanna Sleep" and then 9 more tunes of which I had many favorites, especially "Dead Plane".

No Age plays tomorrow night in Sacto (tell your friends) and will be back in LA before we know it, in the meantime check out Werido Rippers.
