I love documentaries. I love Ken Burns. If it wasn't for Ken Burn's The Civil War documentary, I probably wouldn't have been a history major in college. Ken Burns has revolutionized the way we tell stories about our past and the way we view photographs. His technique of panning and slowly zooming into photographs is still one of the most effective techniques to create drama, and is even included as an effect in Apple's iPhoto software.

On Sunday, September 23rd, Ken Burns will debut his latest documentary, The War, on PBS. The War is a seven-part series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novack, which explores personal accounts of one of the most gruesome events in history. Stories from Omaha Beach to Guadalcanal will be told through dramatic historical footage and photographs.

From jazz to baseball, Ken Burns has an amazing way of telling the stories of our past. He has become the pre-eminent documentary filmmaker of our generation. So if you enjoyed Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, you can't miss this series.
