Eye Candy

Portland’s disco-punk duo Glass Candy graced L.A.’s presence twice this past weekend. On Friday night, Johnny Jewel and Ida No played to a sardine-packed crowd of teenagers at Echo Park’s Tribal Cafe, a juice and coffee bar that clears out part of its floor for bands. Everybody danced and yelled out requests and put the band in a chipper mood.

On Sunday night Glass Candy played Part Time Punks at the Echo, this time with more technical difficulties and a slew of digital camera/camcorder-wielding audience members who think your idea of a good time is watching a live band through their miniature video screens.

As usual, the band played mostly newer songs and had a new crop of assorted 12” and compilations for sale, including a terrific one from their new label, Italians Do It Better. GC do it a little bit better with a live drummer, such as Danava’s Dusty Sparkles, who accompanied them last time around, but Johnny and Ida still put on a good show as a duo and are, of course, as easy on the eyes as ever.
