American Idol: Big Hair and Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi Rocks on!

As a product of the ’80s and growing up outside Philly, this particular LAist poster never got into Bon Jovi. Maybe it was the big hair. We don’t know. But we preferred the skinny, pasty guys from England. Think John Taylor from Duran Duran or Martin Gore from Depeche Mode. So we were really, really not excited to cover tonight’s American Idol. By 8:03 PM, we were having flashbacks and could already smell the Aqua Net.

When Ryan Seacrest announced that the final contestants would be singing “six Bon Jovi classics,” we chuckled. Puhleeze. Did they even have that many hits that you could consider “classic”? Not really. But the singers did admirably with the material they had to work with.

So here’s our take on how final six fared tonight:

Phil Stacey brought his country thing to “Blaze of Glory” from the Young Guns soundtrack. It was just ok. We didn’t love it like Randy and Paula, but we don’t think that he deserved Simon's wrath either.

Jordin Sparks’ performance of “Livin’ on a Prayer” was surreal. And not in a good way. She was terribly off key. And in homage to Bon Jovi and Sanjaya, she grew her hair something fierce. And it wasn’t pretty. It made the big girl even bigger, towering over Seacrest during her critique.

LaKisha Jones took on “This Ain’t a Love Song,” which we’d never heard before. And we liked her version much better than Bon Jovi’s. After a few weak weeks, LaKisha brought her A-game back.

Blake Lewis gave “You Give Love a Bad Name” a 21st century makeover, and we loved it. He was beatboxing to Bon Jovi. And it worked. He is still one of the more exciting performers to watch on this show.

Chris Richardson sang “Wanted Dead or Alive” and it was just “eh.” He might be one of the next to go…

Melinda Doolittle ended the show with “Have a Nice Day.” We know that rockin’ out isn’t her forte, but she did a good job with a pretty lame song.

Tune in tomorrow night at 9 to see the TWO performers who get the boot this week...

Lakisha finally regained her confidence. Half way through her performace you could see and hear her voice kick in. She found what she lost finally.

The shock was the kiss Simon requested and received. Amazing.

American Idol News

Did Duran Duran or Depeche Mode sell over 120 MILLION albums? Can they sell out stadiums world wide? Do either of these 'bands' give millions of dollars to charities around the world? If you were to ask these things and more about Bon Jovi, the answer would be yes. Personally I'm glad youre not a Jovi fan, it leaves more tickets for us, but have your facts str8 when writing about them ok? Enuff hits to consider classic? duh. They play 3 hours when they perform--all classics. I could give you a list, but why bother. Bon Jovi has kicked butt for over 20 yrs...selling out everywhere they go. "YOUR" bands, can barely sell out a 200 seats club. :) HAve A Nice Day.

Guess you are upset because they don't even play Duran Duran or Depeche Mode (who is that?) on the radio while you are stuck on the 405. BUT you don't have to worry about not seeing them up close and personal when you do attend a show ;) you are almost the only one there!! maybe you are upset your CD player gets stuck with those old CDS while being trapped on the 405.. me, I get to hear Bon Jovi all the time.. LOVE IT :))) They are still rocking on our air waves with classics and new stuff!! Bon Jovi 4 eva

How can this be true? You had never heard the song before but you liked it much better than Bon Jovi's version? It's pretty clear that your article is full of bias.

You can no like Bon Jovi all you want, but why don't you do some research before you make claims such as this:
"Puhleeze. Did they even have that many hits that you could consider “classic”? Not really"
My friend, Bon Jovi's amount of chart success, can run circles around anyone you got.

Christine, don't give up your day job. One big lesson you learn in school to become a writer is CK out your facts. Clearly you missed that day in class. You can really piss off some fans (which comes with the territory) but if facts aren't cked you look like an ass! Guess what? You look like an ass !!
Jon

What a winner! You liked LaKisha's version of "This ain't a love song" better than one you never heard? Shows ANYONE can write an article and have it seen. IS THIS AMERICA OR WHAT? You have to have some common sense to be successful though. This must be a site no one sees much Stick to your journal babe!
Lauren

All I can say is you are no reporter. You did not check your facts before you wrote the article. So you are not a Bon Jovi fan. Who cares? There are plenty of us out here in the world that know the back has classic after classic to fall back on and they are still going strong today. Get a life girl.

There are only 8 Bon Jovi fans in the world and they all found their way to this message board. That is a fact.

I think Jon did an increditable job with his coaching. IDOL choosing him is a huge compliment! BONJOVI has been playing sell out shows for many tours. They have many classics and new hits. Do you know how many singers have gone to him to write material/songs for them?! If you don't know much about the band, you should research before you write, any good reporter knows to do that.

This looks like another case of "not checking the facts" before commenting. I agree with those who point out that you cannot possibly be honest in your article, given the fact that you never *heard* "This ain't a Love Song" but you liked the Lakisha version much better than the Bon Jovi version. Your credibility is out the window.

It is a fact Bon Jovi does not have enough classics to hold a 40 minute show. But, they can hold a 30 minute show with breaks, they have enough for that.

It is a fact Lakisha sang her song better also.
Thank you for reading.

"It is a fact Bon Jovi does not have enough classics to hold a 40 minute show. But, they can hold a 30 minute show with breaks, they have enough for that."

No, see actually, it is a fact that Bon Jovi can draw millions of fans to worldwide tours, to see two and a half to three hour sets, and STILL no play all their classic songs. And I can promise you hat noone who comes out of American Idol will ever do that.

Again how can you like one version better than one you had never heard before???

Bon Jovi have way more than 8 fans, 100, 000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong. They have been touring successfully for more than 20 years. During their last tour, which ended less than a year ago, they sold out concerts. BTW it is a fact that their concerts last at least 3 hours, and most songs Bon Jovi play at concerts are their classic hits that the average fans want to hear!

You really should check your facts PRIOR to publishing an article(or trying to save face with replies to comments).

No one is disputing that Lakisha did a good job with TAALS. After all it is an opinion, not a fact. My opinion is Lakisha's version was good~ but better than the original~ doubt it.

I don't understand what a hat or a noone (did you mean he is a coone?) has to do with Bon Jovi being not good enough to be on American Idol. Can you enlighten me?

I was stating my opinion that no artist who comes out of American Idol will ever come near matching the sales, longevity, fanbase, and general career that Bon Jovi have achieved.

Oh. I thought you were calling Bon Jovi a coone and something about a hat. That is what is seemed to me.
