Art (rather, Museums) This Week: Openings/Closings
Opening: Art Now
Yeah, yeah. You can’t wait for Night Vision so you can be all hipster again like last summer. Until then, this Thursday is the start of MOCA Focus: Eric Wesley. Wesley “has become internationally known for his large-scale sculptural works that combine highly crafted objects with elements of performance and a wry, pranksterish social criticism.” At the Pacific Design Center.
And while you wait for Klimt at LACMA, Contemporary Projects 10: Mrzyk & Moriceau and Félicien Rops—You Only Live 25 Times opens on Thursday as well.
Closing: History
Since it was first published in 1791, it has stood the test of time. The Art of Virtue: Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens closes Sunday. The central theme and idea of the book and exhibit is the Art of Virtue: “The attainment of virtue was key to his plan for finding happiness through self-improvement and service to others”
Closing Monday at the Norton Simon Museum is Durga: Avenging Goddess, Nurturing Mother. 70 artworks from India, Tibet, Nepal and Southeast Asia are featured illustrating the “dual nature of the Goddess, that is, the Goddess as a fierce and strong warrior, bearing a variety of weapons in her many hands while she battles a host of demons…” Who’s your mama now?
