The American Academy of Pediatrics says middle and high schools shouldn't start before 8:30 a.m., so students can get enough sleep.

It's finally back to school time for Southern California.

Kids are sitting in classrooms today as L.A. public schools kick off the academic year.

And a lot of teenagers - and their parents - were probably thinking this morning: "Why do we have to be there so early?"

There's a body of evidence that indicates teens do better in school when the first bell rings a little later in the morning.

California State Senator Anthony Portantino of La Cañada is pushing legislation that sets the earliest start time 8:30 a.m.​ His bill is now in Assembly.
