Crocs – yes, Crocs – just got a TON of attention at London Fashion week for a collaboration with designer Christopher Kane.

"Bespoke Crocs were made just for him," says Michelle Dalton Tyree from Fashion Trends Daily. "One set is in solid colors of taupe, mustard and turquoise. There were also these handmade chunky 'geodes' poking through the Crocs' holes to accessorize them."

These special creations will only be sold in high-end stores, too, that stock Christopher Kane's designs.

"Kane actually started the collaboration by contacting Crocs' PR company!" says Tyree.

Ugly shoes seem to be here to stay.

"Comfort is becoming cool," says Lucy Thornley of Crocs. "Comfort and casual is definitely becoming much more globally accepted."

Birkenstocks, for example, are having a bit of a renaissance right now.

"About four years ago, the company started a resurgence that reached a fever pitch last summer," says Tyree, noting that the label now offers footwear in patent leather, metallics, exotic materials and more, not to mention collaborating with retailers like J Crew.

Pool slides are also hot items – not poolside waterslides, but flip-flops with a single band that goes across the top of your foot.

"The collaboration between Rihanna's Fenty label and Puma, which adds faux fur to the slides, is a style they can't keep in stock!" says Tyree.

Think of the rise of ugly footwear as an outgrowth of the burgeoning athleisure market, a $34 billion segment of the fashion industry.

But maybe you're like Take Two listener Cassidy Townsend who wrote on Facebook about whether shoes like Crocs can ever be cool: "I'll get back to you once I figure out if hell has, in fact, frozen over."
