Guest host Libby Denkmann and KPCC film critics Claudia Puig and Tim Cogshell review this week's most memorable releases.
“Transformers: The Last Knight” (PG-13)
TIM: SKIP IT
"[It's] Michael Bay and company throwing exploding Transformers at your face in IMAX 3D for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
CLAUDIA: SKIP IT
"The experience is godawful. It felt to me somewhat akin to torture. It's this ridiculous assault on the senses, this relentless cacophony. It's also tasteless."
“The Beguiled” (R)
CLAUDIA: MEH
"I thought it was really a well-acted ensemble drama, and it was atmospheric, it was moody. It was very much in Sofia Coppola's wheelhouse in that there was a little bit more style than substance there."
TIM: SEE IT
"I liked that 1971 movie, that Don Siegal-Clint Eastwood movie, but in that movie the women were just, you know, crazy. In this movie, they're not crazy... They have issues, but the issues do not circle around just being hysterical."
“The Big Sick” (R)
TIM: SEE IT
"This is a very good one despite the fact that it's a story that, if you listen to NPR, you probably know what happens. Nevertheless, it hits all its beats. It's very sweet, very funny. Holly Hunter, Holly 'Raising Arizona' Hunter: outstanding."
CLAUDIA: SEE IT
"Kumail Nanjiani is fantastic... It's hard to imagine a more charming movie this year, but it doesn't shy away from some very serious and timely and important territory that we really haven't seen covered in romantic comedies before."
