Veterinary Care Backlog 9.13.21

“First it was the curbside service,” says Dr. Peter Weinstein, the executive director of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association. After the pandemic limited face-to-face contact in March of 2020, pet owners were no longer allowed to come in with their pets for appointments. Then came the pandemic pet boom. This flood of new pet owners, combined with appointment backlogs and distancing requirements, overwhelmed veterinary doctors and technicians. “Nobody wants to see an 8 hour line for an emergency clinic,” Dr. Weinstein said. “Pet owners are frustrated and our doctors are burnt out.” Today on AirTalk we’re joined by Dr. Weinstein and Dr. Evelyn Sagastume of Petsadena Animal Hospital to talk about how the pandemic changed operations at animal hospitals. If you have a story about bringing your pet to the vet during the pandemic, or if you work in an animal hospital, give us a call at 866-893-5722, or email atcomments@kpcc.org.
