Introducing LAist’s New Podcast – Imperfect Paradise: Stripper’s Union

In May 2023, the strippers of Star Garden in North Hollywood won a 15-month campaign to unionize, making national headlines. Their victory came at the start of what was dubbed “hot labor summer,” a period of increased strikes and calls for unionization from within new industries - places like Starbucks and Amazon warehouses. In a post-pandemic moment when gig work is on the rise and employees are re-imagining what’s possible in the workplace, we explore a microcosm where all these tensions are heightened: the strip club. Imperfect Paradise: Strippers Union takes listeners inside the real story of the first U.S. Strip club to unionize in decades, and the messy road Star Garden’s dancers took to get there. Joining us today on AirTalk to discuss the new podcast and the unionization efforts is Emma Alabaster, producer and reporter of Imperfect Paradise: Strippers Union and Reagan, one of the lead organizers of the unionization effort at Star Garden.

Episode 1 of a new 4-part series from Imperfect Paradise - Strippers Union launches today. New episodes will drop every Wednesday and it’s available wherever you get your podcasts, and you can also hear it on Sundays at 7pm right here, on LAist 89.3.

The Pain, Shame And Loneliness Of Vulvovaginal Disorders Are Real And Overlooked. We Examine The Solutions

The Los Angeles Times recently highlighted the organization known as Tight Lipped, a grassroots organization that advocates for people with chronic vulvovaginal and pelvic pain. It's unclear just how many people suffer from conditions like vulvodynia. Research has estimated as many as 16% of women suffer from it at some point in their lives. But it's highly plausible it's underreported, and there's a severe knowledge gap with clinicians. Pelvic pain can negatively impact romantic partnerships and can lead to deep feelings of shame and loneliness. Just read some of the stories yourself here in Opening Up, a zine from Tight Lipped. We discuss the causes, symptoms, emotional impacts and solutions with Dr. Chailee Moss, gynecologist with The Centers for Vulvovaginal Disorders, Stephanie Prendergast, cofounder of the Pelvic Pain and Rehabilitation Center, and Kayna Cassard, MFT, sex therapist, painful sex specialist and founder of Sex, Answered, a trauma-informed and unconventional sex therapy intervention center. We really want to hear from you. Have you had pelvic pain? How has it impacted your life? What has helped you or are you still looking for answers? Plus, we'll take your questions.
