Israel Forms Unity Government As Strikes Continue On Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a leading opposition figure on Wednesday created a war-time Cabinet to oversee the fight against Hamas militants after their stunning weekend attack. In the sealed-off Gaza Strip ruled by Hamas, Palestinians struggled to find safety as Israeli bombardment demolished entire neighborhoods and the territory’s only power plant ran out of fuel. The new war-time Cabinet will consist of Netanyahu, Benny Gantz — a senior opposition figure and former defense minister — and current Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, a statement released by Gantz said. The Cabinet will focus only on issues of the war. The unusual arrangement cobbles together a degree of unity after years of bitterly divisive politics, as the military appears increasingly likely to launch a ground offensive into Gaza. Joining us to discuss is Dov Waxman, professor of political science and director of the UCLA Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies.

One On One With Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco And Firearms Director Steve Dettelbach

Before Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Director Steve Dettelbach’s Senate confirmation in the summer of 2022, the agency had seen acting directors come and go for the previous seven years. A former federal prosecutor in Ohio, Dettelbach stressed early on his commitment to driving down gun violence and increasing the public’s feeling of safety. But internally, he faced the challenge of establishing himself as a steady hand in an agency that had not had a steady leader for some time.

Today on AirTalk, we’ll speak with Director Dettelbach about the threat of ghost guns, machine gun modifications, arms trafficking, efforts to improve morale internally and more.

With The Dodgers On The Brink Of Elimination, The Triple Play Digs Into How They Can Survive Game 3

It’s been said that the devil you know is better than the one you don’t, but in the case of the Dodgers in the National League Division Series, the devil they know has them in an 0-2 hole and facing elimination in Game 3 tonight. The devil, in this metaphor, is an Arizona Diamondbacks, a fellow National League West team that the Dodgers know well -- they played 13 times during the regular season, with L.A.winning eight of those contests. But so far it’s been all D-backs in the NLDS as they’ve shelled L.A. starting pitchers -- Arizona hitters chased Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw from Game 1 after scoring six runs on six hits in the first inning, and went on to rout L.A. 11-2. Game 2 was a similar story as the Diamondbacks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1st inning against Dodgers starter Bobby Miller and never looked back, winning 4-2 on the back of a solid pitching performance from their ace Zac Gallen. The series now shifts back to Chase Field in Phoenix for Game 3 as the Dodgers fight for their playoff lives on the road in this best-of-5 series.

Today on AirTalk, the Triple Play of Larry Mantle, Nick Roman and A Martinez gather to discuss what the Dodgers must do in Game 3 in order to live to fight another game in this Division Series.

National Coming Out Day: 35 Years Ago An Awareness Campaign Was A Matter Of Life And Death

National Coming Out Day -- 35 Years Ago An Awareness Campaign Was A Matter Of Life And Death

In 1988, at the height of the AIDS crisis, two members of the LGBTQ+ community decided to take action. Using envelopes stuffed with a bumper sticker, a pamphlet of ideas, and a commitment card, Jean O’Leary and Robert Eichberg began “National Coming Out Day” to destigmatize queerness and raise more awareness around the AIDS crisis. The “commitment card” was particularly important with clear instructions: write your name down on the card proclaiming you are gay or lesbian. Once all the cards had been sent back to NCOD headquarters, its members would compile a list of names commemorating the official National Coming Out Day as October 11th. Joining us to talk about the importance of National Coming Out Day is John Sovec, licensed marriage and family therapist and the author of “Out: A Parent's Guide to Supporting your LGBTQ+ Kid through Coming Out and Beyond.
