Breaking down the latest election results and news
Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.
With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.
The victory validates his bare-knuckle approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal – often misogynistic and racist – terms as he pushed an apocalyptic picture of a country overrun by violent migrants. The coarse rhetoric, paired with an image of hypermasculinity, resonated with angry voters – particularly men – in a deeply polarized nation. Joining us this morning on AirTalk to discuss the election results is Ron Elving, senior editor and correspondent on the Washington Desk for NPR News, Sara Sadhwani, assistant professor of political science at Pomona College and Pete Peterson, dean of the School of Public Policy and senior fellow at The Davenport Institute at Pepperdine University.

Local races were tight. We break down the results from LA to the OC.
The presidential election may be determined, but here in California, there are a few outstanding races that still need to be called. Several of which will help determine the majority of the House. The Los Angeles District Attorney race is all but finished with Nathan Hochman overtaking incumbent George Gascon’s seat. But LA’s local county amendments, mainly Measure G, that aims to expand the County Board of Supervisors in an effort to offset corruption, is still too close to call. And that's not to mention all the OC races and state propositions that were voted on last night as well. Joining us to discuss the local races and proposals from LA to the OC are LAist civics and democracy correspondent, Frank Stoltze, and LAist senior reporter, Nick Gerda.
We reached out to Representative Adam Schiff who won California’s open senate seat, but he was unable to join us this morning.
As election results settle, how are you and your community coping with results?
Regardless of how much your ballot aligns with what’s leading the polls at this time, it’s pretty fair to say this election cycle has been quite exhaustive for spectators. With an assassination attempt and a swapped presidential ticket for a major party, this election cycle has been historic in ways that are going to leave folks overwhelmed. So as we get much of the vote tallies for local, and national races, we’d like to hear from listeners on how they’re coping with results. So, we want to hear from you. How are you coping today? Are you able to find feelings of hope for the country? Call us at 866-893-5722 or email us at atcomments@laist.com.
