  • According to the Los Angeles Kings, public address announcer David Courtney, 54, died. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
  • On Friday the NHL canceled games through December 14 and the All Star Weekend set for Columbus, Ohio on January 26 and 27. And so the lockout drags on.
  • These are strange times for college football in Southern California with things looking bright for UCLA. UCLA comes into Saturday with an 8-2 record while USC is 7-3. UCLA (17, AP; 16, USA Today; 17, BCS) comes into the matchup ranked higher than USC (21, AP; 21, USA Today; 18, BCS) for the first time since 2001 when the 20th ranked Bruins met the unranked Trojans in the Coliseum. This has all the makings of one of the classic rivalry games which has a lot of people taking note.
  • The Clippers last night convincingly beat the Miami Heat at STAPLES Center 107-100 to run their record up to 6-2. The Clippers have beat the Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs and the Heat all in convincing fashion.
  • Phil Jackson wanted too much money, didn't want to travel, wanted to skip morning shootarounds and wanted to drag Jim Buss by the scalp through L.A. Live during the unveiling of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's statue in front of STAPLES Center much akin to the stonings from the days of yore.
  • According to LA Times' Mike Bresnahan and ESPN's J.A. Adande, Mike D'Antoni will be the next head coach of the Lakers. The Lakers fired head coach Mike Brown on Friday after starting the season 1-4.
  • Five games into the season, the Lakers have to start over from scratch after firing head coach Mike Brown. The Lakers started a disappointing 1-4 with calls for Brown's head coming from fans all through social media.
  • There is some good news for the Clippers. There is some bad news for the Clippers. The good news is that they resoundingly beat the previously undefeated San Antonio Spurs 106-84. After back-to-back home losses against the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, there seemed to be some let down after emotional wins to start the season against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Lakers.
  • The Battle of Los Angeles was an incident that occured over the skies of Los Angeles just months after Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan in World War II. It ended up being a false alarm. Somehow that does seem like an appropriate metaphor for this Lakers-Clippers slap-and-tickle fight.
  • The Breeders' Cup Championship returns to Santa Anita Park after two years at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. Although there is no Zenyatta like the last time the Championship was here, there is no lack of excitement for the two days of races.
  • Steve Nash told reporters after the Lakers opening night loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday that things would get uglier before they got better for the Laekrs. He was right. The Lakers were charitable to the Portland Trail Blazers coughing up the ball 25 times en route to their 116-106 loss.
  • Much has been made of the Lakers hiring Eddie Jordan as an assistant coach and installing the Princeton offense. The results throughout the 0-8 preseason looked rather lackluster and continued into the regular season opener as the Lakers fell to the Dallas Mavericks 99-91.
