  • A man who was convicted of killing a local youth counselor while attempting to flee police has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, reports the Pasadena Star News. In June of 2010, Luis Noriega, 29, was driving through Baldwin Park in a stolen SUV. When police tried to pull him over, he began a high-speed chase. He ran a red light and slammed into Walter Williams' car, which erupted in flames. Williams died at the scene.

The effort is intended to combat the fact that our county has the highest rates of chlamydia infections in the country, and the second highest rates of gonorrhea infections.
  • Ladies of Los Angeles, take heed: your reproductive precautions may have been compromised. According to a statement released by the FDA, several kinds of birth control made by QU pharmaceuticals are being recalled due to a packaging error. In certain lots of products, the blisters -- the plastic bubbles that house each pill -- were rotated, meaning that they no longer line up with the correct day.

  • A ball of light that flew through the sky last night was neither bird nor plane nor UFO; rather, experts at NASA believe that the object was a firey asteroid, reports NBC Los Angeles. The fireball made its speedy journey at about 7:30 p.m., and was visible to residents across the southwest -- sightings were reported not just in California but in Nevada and Arizona as well.
  • While walking the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival for his new movie "Trespass," actor Nicolas Cage relayed to reporters the story of how he once got woken up in his former Orange County home by a naked man wearing Cage's leather jacket and eating a fudgesicle.
  • Actor Henry Winkler, a.k.a. The Fonz from "Happy Days," was awarded an honorary membership to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire yesterday thanks to his work helping kids with dyslexia, reports the Washington Post. The award was presented to him at the Washington Embassy by British Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald.
  • A 21-year-old woman from Burbank has been missing since yesterday morning, and police are looking for the public's help in finding her, reports the Daily News. Amanda Salas is described as having unspecified medical problems. She's about 5'3 and 142 pounds, and was last seen barefoot, wearing a gray tank top and blue stretch pants.
  • There's nothing like sitting and enjoying your morning coffee, only to suddenly be disrupted by four police officers standing outside your house with guns raised and aimed in your direction. That's how one Alameda couple started the day yesterday, when officials mistakenly raided their home when they meant to raid the one across the street, according to the Daily Breeze.
