  • Photo by Elise Thompson for LAist If you are a tequila enthusiast, there is only one place to find the smoothest, most exquisite tequila in Los Angeles. Rivera, Chef John Rivera Sedlar's pan Latin restaurant in downtown Los Angeles offers Seasonal Tequilas on Tap™. Rivera produces its own house tequila, with agave specially grown and distilled in Jalisco, Mexico. The house anejo is more like a fine cognac, rich in flavor without any of...
  • Screw KFC and El Pollo Loco. Dinah's makes the real stuff. Through the end of the month, Dinah's in Glendale is offering a free chicken lunch to "new customers". That means anyone over 18 with a picture ID. If you try to go back twice, your name will be on a list (and you will have really bad karma). Customers have their choice of a leg and thigh or breast and wing plus one side dish absolutely free. From opening to closing.
  • It breaks our hearts that the Top Chef Master can't be hometown heroes Suzanne Tracht, Ludovic Lefebvre, Michael Cimarusti or Mark Peel. The show made us fall even more in love with Mark Peel, if that is even possible. Among the final four, Rick Bayless is definitely a fan favorite. Not to burn Anita Lo, Michael Chiarello or Hubert Keller, who we kind of want to sleep with even though we know he'd probably...
  • Sunday from noon until 3pm, the San Antonio Winery will present the next class in its series, "Wines from Down Under", featuring wines from Australia and New Zealand. The price per person is $68.00 per person - including lunch. Australian wines have become very popular over the last decade, particularly the Shiraz. Some of the wines to be sampled are D’Arenberg “Hermit Crab” Viognier Marsanne 2008, D’Arenberg “Laughing Magpie” Shiraz Voignier 2007, and the...
  • Bowls are all the rage right now; it seems like every fast food joint has some kind of bowl. There are even weird-ass breakfast bowls. If we can't pop it, dip it or wrap it, goddammit, we're gonna put it in a bowl! The KFC bowl almost sorta kinda works. The mashed potatoes and gravy are the standard, then the addition of corn is OK; a lot of people mix their corn into their...
  • Convicted killer and former Manson follower Susan Atkins was due for another parole hearing May 28th after being denied a compassionate release last year. According to Associated Press, the parole hearing was abruptly postponed until September. The debate over Atkins' potential release has been raging. After all avenues to request compassionate release were exhausted, the bid for parole appeared to be Atkins' last chance at freedom. Last summer Atkins was given a year to live, so maybe it is just a matter of biding time.
  • LA Winefest will be taking place at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood this weekend. Along with countless wines, sakes, beers and spirits available for tasting, there will be a number of presentations with speakers including Anthony Riboli and Ken Volk. The Winefest is pouring a wide variety of imported wines as well as the kosher wine Hagafen. Microbrews from Firestone Walker Brewing Company and Karl Strauss Brewing Company will be featured. The event will offer the high end ginjo and daiginjo sakes. All tequilas will be 100% agave.
  • Exene Cervenka released a statement on her website yesterday that she has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Usually abbreviated as MS, Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks the nerve cells, affecting communication between the spinal cord and the brain. Although there is no cure, there are treatments to lessen the possibility of disability. It is not life-threatening although it can be debilitating. Other public figures who have...
  • Pork French Dip With Swiss, Pre-Spicy French Mustard/Photo by Caleb Bacon for LAist Roadfood pioneers Jane and Michael Stern's new book, 500 Things to Eat Before it's too Late: and the Very Best Places to Eat Them has just hit the bookstores. Don't worry, the title is not a reflection upon the state of your health or a dire prediction of the apocolypse. It's more of a statement on the homogenization of the country's...
  • Good news for those of you who don't eat beef, pork, or pig's anus! Wienerschnitzel has just introduced the amazing new sea dog. Now you can gorge yourself on Alaskan pollock - and fish anus. It wasn't weird enough that Weinerschnitzel (when did they drop the der anyways?) started serving pastrami and Angus chipotle chili dogs. They had to go dredging the ocean. The sea dog must be in a testing phase right now,...
  • The two works that were stolen According to Lee Joseph, publicist for La Luz de Jesus art gallery in the back of Wacko on Sunset, two paintings were stolen from the gallery today. The works by Lauren Gardiner are worth $1750 total and were already sold to patrons. "There were only a few customers in the store this morning--none of them carrying bags or wearing loose clothing," explained Joseph. "It is our store policy...
