An Echo Park parents group has started a petition to build a fence around the playground near Echo Park Lake. The group Echo Park Parents feels that the playground is dangerously close to the lake, citing incidents where children have allegedly almost fallen into the lake or where dogs have come in from the neighboring dog path, creating a hazard for toddlers.

An unidentified 23-year-old man was shot two times while celebrating his birthday at an apartment complex near USC Friday night. USC students were temporarily told to stay indoors and not open the door to strangers after the non-lethal shooting took place around 11:30 p.m.
