Topline:

The Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series champions! They outlasted the Blue Jays in a dramatic, 11-inning Game 7 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Late-inning drama: Dodgers second-baseman Miguel Rojas hit ninth-inning solo home run that tied the game, 4-4. Then in the 11th, Dodgers catcher Will Smith hit another solo blast to take a 5-4 lead.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Game 6 starter who pitched in relief in Game 7, closed out the 11th to secure the Dodgers win. The Rojas home run tied the game in the top of the ninth after the Dodgers trailed most of the game.

Then, in the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays loaded the bases but couldn't score on two dramatic plays. A ground ball in the infield resulted in a close out at home. Then with two outs, a fly ball to deep left center field resulted in a collision between Dodgers Kiké Hernandez and Andy Pages, who caught the ball and secured the third out.

The Blue Jays threatened again in the bottom of the 11th but couldn't score. The game ended on a double play ball, with Blue Jays runners on first and third base.

How we got here: The Jays in Friday's Game 6 seemed poised to tie the game in the ninth inning until Kiké Hernández initiated an incredible double play to end the game and secure a trip to Game 7. The teams had traded wins in the series, including an 18-inning marathon on Monday that the Dodgers won.

The champions: The Dodgers became the first team to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees did it from 1998 to 2000. Toronto had hoped for its first championship since 1993.

What's next: A parade on Monday.

Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.
