Topline:

The West Hollywood city council will consider a motion on Monday to build protected bike facilities across the city, that would add protection around the existing bike lanes and implementing more.

About the motion: The motion would adopt a citywide policy where it would be required to add and implement protected bike facilities across the city. Protected bike facilities could look like a shared bike lane with pedestrians and cyclists with curb protection from vehicle traffic.

The city currently has a bike lane that stretches from Fountain Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard all the way until the end of the city's westside border.

Why it matters: Councilmember Chelsea Byers, who co-wrote the motion with Mayor Pro-Tempore John Erickson, says the goal is increase the safety of cyclists and people who use other means of micro-mobility like scooters.

She adds that another goal is to make more climate friendly solutions.

"The more we create infrastructure that people feel safe and supported in using, the more they will use it."
