Popular San Gabriel River spot to get a major glow up
Topline:
The San Gabriel River — one of L.A.'s most popular, but over-loved, hot weather retreats — is getting some help in the form of a $3.5 million federal grant to clean up the east fork of the waterway.
Why it matters: The San Gabriel River provides one-third of L.A. County's water supply. At the same time, the east fork of the river above Azusa is a popular getaway from summer heat, and existing facilities can't handle the accompanying trash, bathroom use, and traffic.
What will the grant provide? Trash removal, new bathrooms and walking trails. The funding will be disbursed over the next three years. You can read more about the plan here.
The background: In May, President Joe Biden expanded the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument by an additional 105,919 acres adjacent to the 210 Freeway in the east San Gabriel Valley. The area includes the east fork of the San Gabriel River.
