Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were sworn in as the President and Vice President of the United States on Wednesday at a star-studded inauguration in Washington, D.C. Shadows of the Jan. 6 siege on Capitol Hill loomed over the city, and a large National Guard and law enforcement presence surrounded the festivities. No large protests materialized during the ceremony.
The inauguration, which was not attended by now former President Donald Trump, proceeded without interruptions. The ceremony was led by performances from Jennifer Lopez, Garth Brooks, and Lady Gaga, and a powerful poem by Amanda Gorman.
During his inaugural address, Biden emphasized the need for unity called for an end to partisanship.
