Toyota To Bring Prius Manufacturing To U.S.
RENEE MONTAGNE, Host:
NPR's business news starts with Toyota's plans for the Prius.
For the first time the Japanese carmaker says it will start manufacturing its popular gas-electric hybrid right here in the U.S. Priuses are now manufactured in Japan and China. Starting in 2010, Toyota will make Priuses at a plant in Mississippi. That plant was originally supposed to build SUVs. Toyota decided to start building the Prius there instead because SUV sales are plunging. The demand for the Prius, however, has meant that dealers are running out of the fuel-efficient car and buyers are facing a six month wait.
Toyota also announced it's suspending production of another big vehicle - its Tundra pickup truck. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
