'Telling the Native Story': Leader Charts Course
Columbus Day, for some, is observed as a day of celebration and pride. For others the significance is conflicted, marked as a day of sorrow and loss.
Kevin Gover will soon become Director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. Gover discusses his commitment to preserve, cultivate and teach others about the Native American experience.
The law professor and former Assistant Secretary of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs also explains why he became interested in leading the museum, which occupies three facilities — in Maryland, New York and Washington, D.C. — and how he responded to critics who opposed his appointment.
