Living in a Trailer: Katrina Challenges

Listen 0:00

Many people forced out of their Gulf Coast homes by Hurricane Katrina are still living in trailers the U.S. government purchased for them. The cost of a trailer can far exceed the price of a destroyed house, but government officials say that's what happens when things have to be acquired under emergency conditions.

NPR's Pam Fessler visits a family that is happy to have a trailer, but plagued by maintenance problems. Fessler also talks with the trailer's manufacturer, and a federal official.
