Kings Canyon's Cedar Grove Is Open Again Today, More Than A Year After Being Closed For Flooding
Topline:
Cedar Grove, a popular recreation and camping area in Kings Canyon National Park, is open to the public for the first time since storms in the winter season of 2022-23 closed off access to the area.
What you can do: As of today, the National Park Service is now allowing day use of Cedar Grove, and the visitor center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Wilderness areas are also open, though they'll require a permit — which the newly reopened permit station in the park can help with.
What you can't do: Camping is still closed until July 1 at the earliest. According to NPS, reservations will reopen when the opening date has been finalized. If you go, you may also want to load up on food and supplies beforehand. The Cedar Grove Market is still closed until June 15, and the lodge, grill, showers, and laundry services are planned to reopen June 21.
Effects of the storms: Other nearby parks were also hit hard by recent storms. Death Valley reopened last October following flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Hilary, but some individual roads may still be closed for flood recovery work until next year.
