The Los Angeles Police Department is asking the public to avoid the area near the Crypto.com Arena, as they investigate an incident which involved police fire this morning.

LAPD Sargent Gordon Helper told LAist police shot a man waving a machete this morning at around 9 a.m. He said the man was transported to a hospital but no word on his condition.

Area closed: The area along Figueroa between 12th and Pico is closed. Officials say to use an alternate route as the closure is expected to last for hours more.

LAPD said the department has notified L.A. Live and other venues of the incident.

Events will take place as planned: LA Live said on social media that people heading to events downtown should build in additional time to get there.
