Topline:

The Los Angeles Lakers introduced their new head coach, JJ Redick, at the team’s training facility in El Segundo on Monday.

Why it matters: “If the Los Angeles Lakers, on day one get better every single day, I'm very confident that come April, we will be a championship-caliber team,” Redick said at the news conference.

Why now: When asked how they picked Redick, who has no NBA coaching experience, general manager Rob Pelinka said he’s “one of the best basketball communicators out there, period, hard stop.”

The backstory: Redick was an ESPN analyst and former NBA player with 15 seasons in the league. He’s also hosted a podcast with Lakers star LeBron James, but Redick said Monday he’s done with that for now.

What's next: The season is expected to begin in October, and Redick said they’re still in the process of putting the rest of the coaching staff together.
