Man allegedly shoots, kills sister in North Hills nursing home (updated)
Updated 4:55 p.m. A 58-year-old woman is dead after her brother allegedly shot her in the head at a North Hills nursing home Wednesday, the L.A. Times reported.
LAPD Officer Gregory Baek says the shooting was reported around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Country Villa Sheraton facility in North Hills, according to the Associated Press.
“I use the term 'mercy killing' in terms of describing a killing here because I want people to understand that this man did not randomly walk into a hospital to commit this crime," said Lt. Paul Vernon of the Los Angeles Police Department, according to the Times. "He knew his sister was there in a vegetative state.”
Police arrested Lance Holger Anderson, 60, and booked him for the murder of his sister, Lisa Nave, according to a LAPD release.
Anderson stayed at the nursing home to await police arrival, surrendered without any resistance and left his gun—a small-caliber, derringer-type revolver, on a table next to his dead sister, the release noted.
Police are also investigating a body believed to be that of the suspect's wife, who suffered from dementia, at his home in Canyon Country, CBS reported.
Nave had been in a vegetative state for five years, the Times reported.
