US education secretary talks about education reform during LA visit
United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is in Los Angeles for the NBA All Star game.
He's also making the rounds at area schools to talk about education reform. KPCCs Adolfo Guzman Lopez reported from a panel discussion led by Duncan at L.A.'s Roybal Learning Center.
Duncan told the audience full of students that there are no good jobs for high school dropouts. He said there really aren't good jobs for people who just have high school diplomas.
He urged many of the students to consider teaching. He said the ranks of teachers need to diversify. He said that he'd like to see more Latino teachers join those ranks.
Duncan was joined on a panel by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, musician John Legend, former boxer Oscar De La Hoya.
