UCLA police following strong leads in search for suspect in attempted rape
UCLA police say they’re following strong leads in their search for a man suspected of attempting to rape a female student on campus two days ago.
The attempted rape early Wednesday was the most serious of five assaults of a sexual nature at UCLA in the last month. Nancy Greenstein, with UCLA Police, said officers have tips they believe will lead to an arrest. In the meantime, she said, the department is stepping up patrols outside the student housing where the assault took place.
"Basically we recommend that they not be out and about on their own, that was very early in the morning, or late at night. We encourage them to walk with friends. We also have an escort service that they can avail themselves of."
Greenstein said UCLA has not reduced the number of police and security personnel on campus lately, and assaults are down compared to last year. A campus spokesman said that crime is inevitable on a public university campus in a densely populated area.
