The confrontation occurred around 10 a.m. outside a residence on East 69th Street, near Long Beach Boulevard. Deputies shot and killed the suspect at the scene. A second deputy suffered minor injuries.
Sheriff's spokesman Peter Gomez says the wounded deputy is at a local hospital undergoing surgery.
"We are extremely optimistic. And he is expected to survive," he said. "His family is with him at the hospital being tended to by our department personnel executive staff."
The circumstances of what led to the altercation are still unknown. Investigators did recover a weapon from the scene believed to belong to the suspect. Authorities have not yet released the name of the deputy or suspect.
