Some Southern California races still too close to call as ballot count continues

California’s midterm election may be over, but there are millions of ballots across the state that officials are still counting, with a handful of key Southern California races remaining too close to call.

Hanging in the balance are these contests:

  • 39th Congressional District: 1,957 votes separate the current leader, Republican Young Kim, from Democrat Gil Cisneros. They are seeking an open seat held by Ed Royce, a GOP congressman who is stepping down. The district straddles Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties.
  • 45th Congressional District: GOP incumbent Mimi Walters is 1,011 votes ahead of Democratic challenger Katie Porter in this Orange County district. It’s one of a handful in the region targeted by Democrats as part of the party’s effort to retake the U.S. House.
  • L.A. County Sheriff: The current sheriff, Jim McDonnell, is trailing his challenger, Alex Villanueva, in a race where 335 votes separate the two.
