Schwarzenegger reportedly will extend furloughs
State workers throughout California are bracing for extended furloughs next year.
The non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s Office says California faces a projected budget deficit that tops $20 billion for the fiscal year that starts July 1st.
Sacramento Bee sources say the governor believes the only way to make up for part of that deficit is by extending past June three mandatory unpaid days-off a month for non-essential state workers.
By some estimates the move — that could include some layoffs — would save more than $1.5 billion dollars.
Schwarzenegger hopes to make up a large chunk of the deficit with a federal government bailout. He’s expected to ask the Obama Administration for $8 billion.
Without it, sources tell the Bee, the governor may propose deep cuts in Healthy Families and other social service programs.
The governor’s ruled out tax increases.
Schwarzenegger’s expected to formally introduce his proposed budget on January 8th.
