A brush fire in Santa Clarita has blazed through 5,000 acres and is 5 percent contained.
The Rye Fire began at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday near Rye Canyon Loop and quickly spread, Los Angeles County fire officials said.

There are more than 500 firefighters on the scene. The fire shut down all lanes of the 5 Freeway at State Route 126 in both directions in the morning, but is now back open in both directions, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Road closures
- Citrus Street in Valencia is partially closed between Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, but drivers can still access the mall and other businesses

School evacuations
- Westridge High School
- West Ranch High School
- Rancho Pico Middle School
- Oak Hills Elementary School
The students will be evacuated to the College of the Canyons cafeteria.

Evacuation centers have been set up in Pacoima, Sylmar and Santa Clarita. See a map of these locations below:
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's station has lost power, so 911 calls are being redirected. The sheriff's department is asking residents to be patient with dispatchers who may be unfamiliar with the area. The Newhall Community Center has also lost power and is closed for the rest of the day.
All Metrolink trains to Santa Clarita are currently in full service.
Meanwhile, firefighters continue to battle wildfires in Sylmar and Ventura County. Dangerous fire conditions are expected to last throughout the week. See a map of forecasted threats by region here — fire threats are expected to peak on Thursday, when low humidity and high winds have potential to aid the growth of fires.
