Rose Bowl rivals collaborate on humanitarian project
The competitors in the 99th Rose Bowl game Monday will pool their efforts off the field to help pack food for hungry Angelenos.
Students and alumni from the University of Wisconsin and Stanford University are participating in an annual service project hosted by the Jewish Family Service of LA.
This is the second year the organization has worked with the Rose Bowl football teams.
“Our friends from the University of Oregon actually started the tradition last year as part of a way to give back to the community,” explained the nonprofit’s spokeswoman, Nancy Volpert.
More than 100 volunteers from Wisconsin and Stanford will take part this year.
“They will be sorting items that have come in through food donations,” Volpert said. "They will be breaking products down so that when we bulk items-- for example, beans, rice, dried milk, oat meal, and other items that are much less expensive for us to purchase in bulk—they will package them into individual servings so we can distribute them.”
Volpert said the organization helps deliver food across the Southland to about 12,000 people in need each month.
