Protesters object to university tuition increases at La Opinion's offices
About 100 people protested expected public university tuition increases today in front of La Opinion's downtown L.A. offices.
The newspaper's president, Monica Lozano, is University of California regent and a member of the Disney board. The protestors urged Lozano to vote against upcoming student tuition hikes and to approve benefits for Disney hotel workers.
The protest was organized by UNITE HERE, the union that represents Disney hotel workers. UCLA student Joseph Silva supports the union's efforts.
"Most students didn't even know about the UC Regents, let alone that one of them works for Disney, which has been lobbying for tax cuts, which costs the state money, which will cost the schools money," he said.
