President Obama to meet with Democratic members of Congress
President Obama meets with Democratic members of the House at his house – the White House - tonight. Last night, he met with Democratic Senators, including California’s Barbara Boxer.
The goal was to identify three bills the senators thought they could pass before they adjourn for the summer.
Jobs are a theme: the Senate wants to pass an extension of unemployment benefits, and to make it easier for small businesses to obtain credit. Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer predicts that the Senate will also pass the financial overhaul bill.
"We’re going to pass it with Republican votes," she says.
"We have about three Republicans and I’m very, very pleased. And we have to get back to that. Where Republicans crossed over and helped us, and we worked and crossed over and helped them. That’s crucial."
Many of those senators – including Boxer – face tough re-election fights, so they’re looking for accomplishments they can run on.
