National Night Out: Police reach out to communities throughout LA-area

This year's National Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 4 (though some communities hold their events on other nights). It's an annual night of community events across the United States meant to promote partnerships between police and local communities, according to the National Association of Town Watch, which promotes the events. They'll include block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and more.

The night is "a chance to bring neighborhoods together with the men and women who protect them," Joe Biden said in a quote on the National Night Out website. "The safety of our communities depend on both law enforcement and the citizens they serve, and [these] events will enhance that cooperation."

Dozens of Southern California communities are signed up to participate. Here are details on some of the events happening around the greater Los Angeles area (all events are on Tuesday, Aug. 4 unless otherwise noted):

Anaheim

The Anaheim National Night Out event includes a helicopter display, a SWAT demo, a K-9 demo, a mounted police demo and more.

When: 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

Arcadia

Arcadia's event includes a concert in the park with the USO — Big Band providing a patriotic-themed concert. They'll also have activities for kids, crime prevention information, a 1959 Ford and more on the lawn of City Hall. (They're also holding a Kid's Night Out on Friday, Aug. 7, which will cost $15 with games, crafts, a movie, dinner and more, including their talking police unit, RC Andy.)

Boyle Heights

The Boyle Heights event is set to take place at Hollenbeck Police Station. They promise entertainment and family fun, along with a peace march starting at Evergreen Recreation Center at 5:30 p.m.

Burbank

Carson

Carson Sheriff’s Station is hosting a "Community Night Out" on Wednesday. Events include station jail tours throughout the evening, live entertainment, law enforcement exhibits and more. They'll also be offering appetizers.

When: Wednesday, Aug. 5, 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Downtown Los Angeles

The LAPD's Central City Police Boosters are holding their National Night Out event at L.A. Live. There will be special appearances by members of the Dodgers, the Clippers, the Lakers and the Kings. iHeartRadio is set to be broadcasting live from the event. They're going to have the LAPD SWAT and bomb squad there, live bands and entertainment.

When: 5 p.m.-9 p.m.

Los Angeles — Newton

The Newton Division knows how to draw a crowd — they're offering free lucha libre pro wrestling, as well as music, food and more family entertainment.

When: 6 p.m.-9 p.m.

Los Angeles — Olympic

The LAPD Olympic Area division is throwing an event encouraging residents to come meet community leaders, as well as the division's senior lead officers. They promise fun and games, contests, safety tips, food, drink and more.

Los Angeles — Rampart

The Rampart Area division is having it's 23rd annual celebration of National Night Out. They're holding a walk to the Rampart Police Station, ending with a rally at the station including food, drinks, giveaways, and live entertainment.

When: Walk begins at 5:30 p.m.; food and drinks start at 6 p.m.; live entertainment starts at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Walk starts 2230 W 6th Street (MacArthur Park); concludes with a rally at Rampart Community Police Station, 1401 W. 6th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017

Los Angeles — Wilshire

The Wilshire Area Division of the LAPD is holding an event with raffles, food, a surveillance camera presentation and entertainment from old-school hip-hop station KDAY 93.5 FM.

When: 5 p.m.

Other Wilshire Area events include one at Poinsettia Park, and a walk for both people and pets. The Pico Walk encourages everyone to wear blue and includes a squad car escort, as well as hot dogs and lemonade at the end of the walk.

When: 6:45 p.m.

Where: Starting at Hound Dog + Cat (5450 W Pico Boulevard) and ending at Eco Dog Wash & Care (5751 W Pico Boulevard)

Marina del Rey

The Marina del Rey Sheriff's National Night Out is set to include a panel with ministers and community leaders. It's being led by Rev. Judi Wortham-Sauls, with topics including diversity.

When: 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

Monrovia

Monrovia promises the chance to meet Monrovia police officers, share a meal and ask the police any questions they've always wanted to ask a cop. The food is free, and there will also be music.

When: 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Reseda

The West Valley Division of the LAPD is holding a movie night, showing "Big Hero 6" at Randal Simmons Park next to the station.

Van Nuys/Valley Glen

The Van Nuys division is having their event at Valley Glen Community Park. They promise hot dogs, chips and drinks while allowing the chance to sign up for Neighborhood Watch, providing info on how to prepare for a disaster and more.

When: 6 p.m.
