Metrolink is launching 16 new trains today.

The rail system’s chief John Fenton has talked about adding more trains tailored to Southland commuters’ needs. This launch is happening as those commuters are thinking twice about driving when gas prices approach five bucks a gallon.

The new trains include four express runs on the San Bernardino and Antelope Valley lines. Metrolink officials say the express trains will save daily commuters up to five hours a week.

Ten new regular trains will join the San Bernardino, Antelope Valley and Ventura County lines.

As beach weather settles in on the calendar, two seasonal Inland Empire-Orange County trains will carry passengers to and from San Clemente Beach.
