Metro buys Union Station
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Thursday that it’s buying Union Station in downtown L.A.
Metro officials said they’ve negotiated a deal to purchase Union Station from a real estate holding company for $75 million. It includes 38 acres and 6 million square feet in entitlements.
Metro officials promised to turn one of the last of the grand American train depots, built 72 years ago, into a "21st century transportation hub," while retaining its iconic architecture.
Union Station’s expected to see a surge in passengers with a Regional Connector transit project and Silver Line express bus station. Officials said they also plan expanded retail areas and, eventually, berths for high-speed trains.
L.A. Union Station serves Amtrak trains, Metrolink trains, Metro light rail lines and several bus services. About 80,000 passengers a month pass through it now.
