Malibu celebrates 25th birthday with show of surfboards

With our free press under threat and federal funding for public media gone, your support matters more than ever. Help keep the LAist newsroom strong, become a monthly member or increase your support today.

If you've watched the 1959 film, " Gidget ," owned the 1971 Malibu Barbie or have seen the iconic artwork for 1966 surfing documentary " The Endless Summer ," it may surprise you to know that Malibu is only 25 years old.

Well, at least officially.

On Monday night, the city is celebrating the anniversary of the March 28, 1991 date that the city formally established itself as a municipality with a community gathering at City Hall

“The community of Malibu has much longer and deeper roots than the city as a municipality,” said city spokesman Matt Myerhoff.

One highlight of the anniversary celebration will be the debut of "Art of the Board," an art installation featuring 20 surfboards designed by members of the community.

“Basically it is an homage to Malibu’s surfing culture and history,” Myerhoff said.

The surfboards were culled from the community's personal collections. A custom framework was installed so that the surfboards could hang from the ceiling of Malibu's City Hall, where they will be on display after Monday's unveiling.

A video produced for the anniversary will dive into Malibu's roots, with interviews from longtime community members, and a look all the way back to when the land was inhabited by the Chumash Indians , Myerhoff said.

Monday's celebration will also feature a live band, food and a recognition of the city's founding mothers and fathers for their contributions by the Malibu City Council.  There will also be a silent auction which will include works from the iconic "Endless Summer" artist John Van Hamersveld. Money raised from the auction will benefit the Malibu Arts Fund.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else.
