Long Beach police identify officer who shot, killed Carson man
Long Beach Police Department identified Officer Vuong Nguyen as the policeman who shot and killed a Carson man in front of a casino on Dec. 14.
Police shot 39-year-old Mharloun Saycon after he walked into Looff’s Lite-A-Line with a knife, according to a police report.
Officers received a call of a man waiving a knife around inside and were told some customers feared for their safety, according to police.
Saycon's family said he wasn't dangerous but suffered from bipolar disorder. Now they are suing the Long Beach Police Department for $20 million and seeking changes to officer training. The family's attorney, Dan Stormer, said the casino's management called police not because Saycon presented a threat, but because he seemed to be out of it.
Police declined to comment further on the case, pending litigation.
The claim was filed on March 17, and the city was given 45 days to respond.
