Olympic committee officially chooses LA for 2028 games
The International Olympic Committee officially approved Los Angeles as host of the 2028 Summer Games Wednesday.
In L.A., the torch above the peristyle of the Coliseum was lighted in celebration, and in Lima, Peru, the L.A. delegation presented their plan for the Games.
Los Angeles originally wanted the 2024 Games, but struck a deal with the IOC to let Paris host those Games. The unprecedented deal for L.A. to host the 2028 Olympics and Paris to host the 2024 Games was struck back in July.
Swimming champion and four-time gold medalist Janet Evans is on the committee overseeing L.A.’s bid, and she joined the delegation in Peru.

“We believe that these extra four years will give us time to make our games better,” Evans said. “To understand the athletes needs, to take our existing infrastructure and make it even better."
Now, the decade-long effort to upgrade facilities, public transit and other amenities in preparation for the Games begins.
