LAX to unveil progress on Tom Bradley terminal
L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will gather with other political and transportation leaders Wednesday at L.A. International Airport for a first look at upgrades to the Tom Bradley International Terminal.
They will see the north concourse and the first three aircraft gates at the new terminal.
Two of the gates became operational this week; planners opened one up last September. Crews have a lot more work to do, including tearing down the existing gates to make room for all 18 new ones. Airport officials say they’ll complete that phase sometime next year.
Some of the gates will accommodate larger, new-generation aircraft, such as the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental and the Airbus 380 super jumbo. The mayor and the other gathered officials will observe a Singapore Airlines Airbus 380 touch down and dock at one of the new gates. The landing will include a demonstration of the gates’ state-of-the-art, laser-guided docking technology.
The project -- part of a $1 billion plan to spruce up LAX -- features a 150,000-square-foot Great Hall of new retail shops and eateries inside the Tom Bradley terminal.
