LAUSD looks to adjust school calendar
The Los Angeles Unified School District is considering a slight shift in the school calendar that administrators say will render large dividends in learning.
The LAUSD wants to move the first day of school to Aug. 15, about three weeks earlier than it is now. The end of the school year would also move back, to June 1.
In a statement on the LAUSD website, the school district says the proposal is driven by principals who say the change would improve learning and academic performance — students couldn’t blame winter vacation for doing poorly on tests because the end of semester exams would be administered just before the holidays instead of in February.
More than a dozen campuses adopted an earlier start date this past summer. According to the Los Angeles Times, the school district’s received hundreds of emails about the proposed change, most of them opposed to starting the school year earlier. Some people are concerned it’s too hot for students to be in school in August.
LA Unified’s school board is expected to vote on the proposal in a few weeks.
