LA Unified files for court order to stop midyear busing funding cuts
L.A. Unified formally asked an L.A. County Superior Court judge Wednesday to step in and stop the state of California from carrying out cuts that would zero out the district’s transportation budget for the rest of the year.
In the request for a temporary restraining order, L.A. Unified argued that it stands to lose $38 million used to transport students, most of whom are bused because of state and federal mandates. The cuts would cause severe and irreparable injury to the district and nearly 50,000 students, the request stated.
This request is meant to stop the cuts before they take effect Jan. 1 as a lawsuit filed last week by the district makes its way through superior court.
The request for a temporary restraining order is being watched by school districts large and small who’d also like their midyear cuts to be blocked.
A ruling on LAUSD’s temporary restraining order is expected Thursday.
