LA Unified School Board race too close to call

Tuesday's L.A. Unified School Board runoff election is too close to call.

Teachers union-endorsed candidate Bennett Kayser is just a few hundred votes ahead of opponent Luis Sanchez. In the weeks before the election, both sides embarked on a frenzy of spending.

The teachers union spent a lot on mailers that attacked Sanchez as a bureaucrat and playing up Kayser’s teaching career. Allies of L.A. Mayor Villaraigosa played up Sanchez’s reform credentials and accused Kayser as an agent of the status quo.

Neither candidate is declaring victory – or conceding. In the Eagle Rock-to-Huntington Park district, 238,000 people are registered to vote. Fewer than 10 percent voted.

The L.A. city clerk says there are still thousands of ballots to count in the L.A. Unified and L.A. Community College elections. The city has three weeks to certify the results.
