LA Metro shifts some bus routes, hands others off to smaller agencies
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be making several changes to bus service starting this June. The changes are part of a system revamp intended to make service more frequent on most of the network so that riders on most lines never have to wait more than 15 minutes.
Houston's transit agency recently made similar changes, resulting in a 10 percent increase in ridership. L.A. Metro's own ridership has been dropping in recent years.
To offset the cost of running more frequent buses, the agency will pare down service on less-used lines. This caused some protest at a series of public meetings on the issue in February, so Metro decided not to discontinue any bus lines unless service could be shifted to a regional or municipal agency.
Such is the case for several lines in the San Gabriel Valley, which will be picked up by Foothill Transit.
A bus from downtown L.A. to Disneyland which had been on the chopping block will remain unchanged.
Metro has also modified several routes on the Westside of L.A. to serve the new Expo Line Phase II to Santa Monica, which will open next month.
